As The Leaves Start to Fall, It is Time Turn Inward

October brings a natural change in energy shifting from the growing, travel and vacation season to one composed of earthy colors, grounding of the leaves, shorter days, coolness and softness. The harsh sun has been replaced with softer  rays on the earth as leaves, grasses decompose and nourish the soil. It is a time to pause, look inward, explore change within ourselves and live the word “AHISMA”. Explore with kindness how the body reacts to season and  schedule change. Recognize and flow with it using blankets to curl up in, warmth from mid afternoon sun, and begin a search for a yoga practice which entices you to commit.

“AHISMA” is a powerful word in the context of Yoga Philosophy taken from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras compiled around 400ce. It is the foundational yogic principle of non-harming and non-violence. Let’s gaze at ourselves and shed the criticism, harsh judgements or anger directed at ourselves and others. Replace it with compassion and respect and observation. We also might explore it even further with “why does this action or phrase trigger me” — self- exploration. Let the “negative self-talk” and “criticism of others” fall to the ground and replace with Autumn’s soft sunlight.
